Canadian-Fertilizer-Institute

Canada

The Canadian Fertilizer Institute (CFI) is an industry association that represents manufacturers, wholesale and retail distributors of nitrogen, phosphate and potash fertilizers. Canada’s fertilizer industry plays an essential role in ensuring that world food needs can be met economically and sustainably. Canada supplies approximately 12 per cent of the world’s fertilizer materials. We are the world’s largest exporters of potash and elemental sulphur. As well, our industry contributes over $12 billion annually to the Canadian economy.

One of the cornerstones of CFI’s sustainability program is 4R Nutrient Stewardship – Right Source @ Right Rate, Right Time, Right Place® which gives farmers the ability to use Best Management Practices for the efficient use of fertilizer.

CFI has been working with federal and provincial governments as well as farm groups and environmental groups across Canada to promote adoption of 4R Nutrient Stewardship. Through a series of Memorandums of Understanding including Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick and PEI, CFI has established partnerships with key leaders in the agriculture sector.

International Stewardship Symposium
On July 14-15, 2015 agriculture, research, and farming communities will come together to discuss the issues and solutions on how we can feed the burgeoning population and help producers meet the growing global demand for food, feed, fibre and fuel in an increasingly sustainable manner. This will require more efficient use of nutrients, as well as special care of our waterways and soils.  The Symposium will focus in four themes: Climate Smart Agriculture, Metrics for Sustainable Agriculture, Framework for Increasing Soil Quality and Better Access to Inputs for Smallholders in Africa.

4R Research Network
The 4R Research Network is composed of 10 leading Canadian researchers who are qualifying economic, social and environmental benefits resulting from advanced fertilizer management systems under 4R Nutrient Stewardship. The fundamental focus of the research is providing Canadian growers with the information they need to enhance competitiveness, increase productivity and adaptability under the 4R framework to meet market needs while addressing the sustainable intensification of agriculture. The result will be science-based data that demonstrates, through agronomic research, the benefits of the 4Rs for improved farmer economics, feeding the world, and protecting the environment. Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Crops
CFI is continuing to expand our 4R sustainability program to farmers through a partnership with the Canada Grains Council, including global food giants such as Unilever, General Mills and Wal-Mart. These food companies are beginning to signal unified interest, support, and demand for programs, tools, and information that can help crop producers continuously improve and optimize their fertilizer use, yield, and profitability. CFI has joined a sustainability roundtable to provide support and expertise based on a number of sustainability indicators for reducing the impacts of climate change. Through the Roundtable for Sustainable Crops, CFI and others are working alongside these food companies to improve the adoption of 4R fertilizer best management practices for the sustainability, efficiency and productivity of farming.
