The International Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA) is the international association for the global fertilizer industry. IFA promotes the industry through its research and outreach initiatives.
IFA promotes nutrient stewardship programs and fertilizer best management practices in order to encourage farmers to best use fertilizer products.
Nutrient stewardship programmes encourage farmers to follow the principles of using the right fertilizer source at the right rate, right time and right place so that fertilizer application can be managed to achieve economic, social and environmental goals.
This entails applying concepts such as integrated plant nutrient management, balanced fertilization and site-specific nutrient management. Best management should result in improved productivity, profitability and nutrient use efficiency and depends upon farmers having access to the knowledge required to improve management and to a timely supply of quality products.
Fertilizer best management practices (FBMPs) are agricultural production techniques and practices developed through scientific researches and verified and continuously adapted in the fields to maximize economic, social and environmental benefits.
They are aimed at managing the flow of nutrients in the course of producing affordable and healthy food in a sustainable manner that protects the environment and conserves natural resources at the same time profitable to farmers.
Through FBMPs, the benefits derived from fertilizers are maximized while the losses and negative effects of over/under/or misuse of fertilizers are minimized.
